Mozart

As last weekend was already my fourth trip to Vienna to see my friend Mari, neither of us felt the need to do touristy stuff. Mari was keen to see a concert in the Musikverein, and so was I. I like classical concerts and to listen to Mozart in one of the world's most wellknown music halls seemed great. How wrong we were.

For a shocking €54 I managed to do the most touristy thing in Vienna so far. And that includes visiting the Christmas markets. At first, I was quite impressed. A lot of people had dressed up beautifully. There were women in saris, a woman in a gorgeous kimono, and a lot of heels and pretty LBDs. There was a grandfatherly old man in a suit and hat. It all seemed very smart. The hall is amazing, people were snapping for ages before the orchestra entered.

And when they entered, that was when M and I exchanged an 'oh my god' look. The whole lot of them were dressed in pastel coloured Mozart outfits . White wigs and all. They then proceeded to play a 'best of' set of Mozart's work. Occasionally accompanied by an opera singer in dirndl dress and a male singer in traditional costume. The old man with the hat was happily tapping away with his walking stick, while we tried not to laugh too audibly. Just when we thought things couldn't get any worse, the mail singer walked on stage with a caged bird on his back.

The orchestra and the singers were fine but man.....the both of us will remember this concert for very different reasons.

The pic to the left is of crap quality but gives an idea of the orchestra.

Play me I'm yours

Play me I'm yours

Thirty pianos are scattered around London. A project by an artist, who brought his work to London after Burmingham, Sydney, Sao Paola and Bury St Edmunds. Bypassers can play them and bystanders can enjoy. Simple as that. We found these two blokes in Notting Hill, playing incredibly well. The one we saw on Soho Square a few hours later was less interesting: amongst tramps and drunks, someone was abusing whatever composer it was. But as an arts project: fantastic. So much joy for so many!

Still spring

It's still spring. Only I can't enjoy it properly. My new project is at a big investment bank that went bust in September, and working for the administrator means much pressure, long hours, much politics and many deadlines. I managed to get a quick run and a yoga class in but other than that it was a week full of work. But by Friday 4pm I'd met my target for the week. So there was time for me and Zoe to have a cheap and cheerful Italian dinner in South Kensington before heading to the Royal Albert Hall for a classical concert. Really enjoyed it, even got the hang of singing Rule, Brittania and Land of Hope and Glory.

But back to spring. I can see spring out of the window of the 24th floor I work on. I can actually see the whole of London and the next counties on a clear day. Which when the sky is blue looks very springy. Zoe mentioned the thousands of daffodils in St James Park, so I might get my camera and do a London-in-spring arvo tomorrow. Today I just rest. My head was spinning last night and it won't have been the one glass of red. Will go for a run, do a bit of work that needs done by Monday morning and will watch all three ruggers matches, hoping for Ireland to win its well deserved grand slam. And that's all. Balcony doors are opened to give me the smell of spring without leaving my couch. Sun and longer days, the best thing in the world.

Merry christmas all

Not x-massy, but one of my fav songs (from the Dublin-made film Once, with Frames singer Glen Hansard) and the melody is right for this time of the year!

Take that

Unlike many girls, I was never a Take That fan. I didn't shed a tear when they broke up. Take that was for utterly stupid girls who knew bugger all about music. Shamefully, I have to admit that I now quite like them. They were on the beeb yesterday, and I am now rewatching the show (not for them, but because I missed the first 1,5 hours) and actually think they're quite cool. Then again, I also think Girls Aloud are pretty cool. Would my musical taste be deteriorating?
